Mulch, gravel and topsoil use area × finished depth, but their densities, compaction or settlement assumptions, bag sizes and bulk increments differ. Sod uses area and pallet coverage. A paver project adds a piece-count grid plus separate base and bedding-sand volumes. Keep each product on its own line even when the footprints overlap on the drawing.
The worksheet contains no default prices. Measure first, calculate the rounded purchase quantity for each product, then enter current supplier quotes, delivery fees and minimums exactly as offered.

Measure each zone once and label the depth basis
Draw rectangles, circles or measured irregular sections for every material zone. Record whether a depth is finished, loose, compacted, or fill depth inside a container. Those terms are not interchangeable: a compacted gravel layer can require a different delivered quantity, while raised-bed soil uses the inside fill volume rather than the bed's outside dimensions.
If a footprint contains layers, reuse the verified plan area but retain one row per layer. A paver patio, for example, can have paver pieces, base material and bedding sand over different footprints because excavation margins extend past the finished paver field.
- Every material zone outlined and assigned a code on the plan.
- Irregular zones split into measurable sections with overlaps removed.
- Finished, compacted, loose or container-fill depth written beside each line.
- Openings, fixed structures and areas outside scope deducted once.
- Supplier bag size, pallet coverage, density and bulk increment copied from the exact quote.
- Material allowance selected and shown separately from package or increment rounding.

Delivery is not a per-unit material price. Record delivery, pallet deposits, short-load or minimum-order charges, access constraints and return rules on separate rows so two quotes with different fee structures can be compared fairly.

Use current supplier quotes only. Labour, excavation, disposal, permits, equipment and drainage work require their own scoped rows or contractor quotation.
Sequence deliveries around access and storage
A mathematically correct quantity can still be a poor order if the truck cannot reach the drop point or different bulk materials contaminate one another. Mark each drop location, vehicle access width, overhead obstruction, surface load concern and storage boundary before accepting a delivery.
Confirm whether bagged and bulk options use the same material specification. The mulch and topsoil calculators compare purchasing formats from the bag volume and bulk increment you enter, but they do not claim two products are compositionally identical.
